Summary
Welcome to our July spending post! Our total spend for the month was £4,042 or $5,115.
Time for a big announcement. We’re leaving the Caribbean!
We were supposed to be moving country for Mr Way’s job, but this has fallen through and we will now be returning to the UK. This is equal parts relief and disappointment for us. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed our time here, but we weren’t willing to move again for a company who weren’t treating us well.
Because of this, we have a few differences in our spending this month. We paid our last rent instalment because the last month was paid for on moving in. We’ve also increased our spending in a few areas as we look to make the most of the last few weeks here. Anyway, on to the spending!
We break our main expenses down into broad categories starting with the big 3; housing, food and transport. Everything else falls into the entertainment category, with any large inclusions explained in detail.
Category | Amount (£) | Amount ($) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Housing | £1,492 | $1,888 | See below |
Food | £739 | $935 | See below |
Transport | £515 | $652 | See below |
Entertainment/misc | £1,296 | $1,640 | See below |
Total ($) | $5,115 | ||
Total (£) | £4,042 |
We break each of these categories down in the following sections, giving detail for any large expenses.
Housing
Our July spending is reduced here as we’ve now paid our last rent before we move out in August. It will be a huge relief to pay less for housing once we return to the UK!
Category | Amount ($) | Notes |
---|---|---|
Rent | $1,655 | |
Water & Electricity | $100 | |
Internet | $133 | |
Total ($) | $1,888 | |
Total (£) | £1,492 |
Food
Our July spending on food was £739/$935. This includes everything on our supermarket shop receipts for the month. Again this is slightly higher than normal, because we had a couple of events which we bought food for.
Transport
Our July spending on transport includes a taxi from the airport to our new home in the UK. Expensive, but it wouldn’t be possible to use public transport with all our belongings!
Category | Amount ($) | Notes |
---|---|---|
Fuel | $80 | |
UK Taxi | $572 | |
Total ($) | $652 | |
Total (£) | £515 |
Entertainment/Misc
Our July spending on misc items includes a few additional items. We increased our eating out budget as we look to make the most of our last few weeks here. We also bought some clothes and shoes for our return to the UK. We realised we only really have warm weather stuff, which isn’t going to be good enough for the cold, wet UK climate!
Category | Amount ($) | Notes |
---|---|---|
UK Phone Bills | $16 | |
Student Loan | $295 | |
Eating Out | $648 | |
Boat Trip | $110 | |
Clothes | $152 | |
Shoes | $325 | |
Medical | $18 | |
Sports | $55 | |
Presents | $5 | |
Total ($) | $1,640 | |
Total (£) | £1,296 |
That’s All for Now, Folks!
Considering the average US household spend is $5,111 we’re very happy with our spending. We live on a very high cost of living island!
See you next month!
Thanks for the update as always.
Real shame to hear how the Carribbean adventure ended so quickly but understand why you are both happy and sad.
Are you going to create a post explaining what happened?, What the original plan was? (I assume another Carribbean island but wasn’t fully sure), where you have moved in the UK and what the plans are?
Thank you for keeping us updated and hope all the family are well?
