Monthly Spending – March 2025

Summary

Welcome to our March spending post! Our total spend for the month was £2,449

This is probably about our ‘standard’ monthly expenditure now. Unfortunately we keep having large expenses in between, so our ‘average’ is coming our closer to £3,000 than we would like.

We break our main expenses down into broad categories starting with the big 3; housing, food and transport. Everything else falls into the entertainment category, with any large inclusions explained in detail.

CategoryAmountNotes
Housing£392See below
Food£817See below
Transport£222See below
Entertainment/misc£1,018See below
Total£2,449

We break each of these categories down in the following sections, giving detail for any large expenses.

Housing

Our March spending on housing is fairly standard, with just the usual bills to pay.

CategoryAmountNotes
Gas & Electric£121See below
Water£54
Council Tax£188
Internet£29
Total£392

We continue to be very happy with our energy supplier, Octopus Energy. Our energy is from 100% renewable sources too which is a great bonus. If you are interested, click through this link and you will get £50 and so will we! It can be hard to find a decent energy company but we really do recommend Octopus.

Food

Our March spending on food was £817. This includes everything on our supermarket shop receipts for the month. It’s higher than usual this month because of a few large items bought at the supermarket. We’ll be aiming to reduce again!

Transport

Our March spending on transport is about right for our new ‘normal’, with Mr Way commuting on the bike/train. Hopefully the fuel costs can reduce in the coming months.

CategoryAmountNotes
Fuel£103
Train£99
Cycling Gear£20
Total£222

Entertainment/Misc

Our March spending on misc items is higher than we would like ina a few areas. It includes an annual tennis membership, but also some high ticket items like new pans, clothes, a hotel stay and annual payments for our new allotment…. More on this soon hopefully!

CategoryAmountNotes
Phone Bills£13
Eating Out£87
Activities£101
Clothes & Shoes£197
Dental£42
Presents£40
Allotment£85
Tennis Membership£145
Hotel£96
Pharmacy£17
Pans£133
Wax£62
Total£1,018
That’s All for Now, Folks!

Considering the average UK household spend is £2,700, our aim is to get down below that level. We initially thought we would be able to go much lower but have been surprised by the increase in just about everything since we came back in 2023!

See you next month!
