Summary
Welcome to our October spending post! Our total spend for the month was £5,594 or $6,433.
We’re generally expecting to be closer to $5,000 in a ‘typical’ month, so this was a bit above our expectations. This is mostly due to booking flights for our New York trip, as well as extra expenses with visitors in town!
We break our main expenses down into broad categories starting with the big 3; housing, food and transport. Everything else falls into the entertainment category, with any large inclusions explained in detail.
Category | Amount (£) | Amount ($) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Housing | £2,795 | $3,214 | See below |
Food | £933 | $1,073 | See below |
Transport | £115 | $132 | See below |
Entertainment/misc | £1,751 | $2,014 | See below |
Total ($) | $6,433 | ||
Total (£) | £5,594 |
We break each of these categories down in the following sections, giving detail for any large expenses.
Housing
Our October spending sees our rent go up even higher. It’s a painful total, but it’s the fact of where we’re living – plus we’re in one of the nicer developments on the island.
Category | Amount ($) | Notes |
---|---|---|
Rent | $2,850 | |
Water & Electricity | $253 | |
Internet | $111 | |
Total ($) | $3,214 | |
Total (£) | £2,795 |
Food
Our October spending on food was £933/$1,073. As explained previously, this includes everything on our supermarket shop receipts for the month.
This is higher than normal because October had 5 weekends, and we also have family visiting for the end of October and most of November. Hopefully we can get this total down again after our visitors leave!
Transport
October saw us topping up with petrol a bit more than usual. We also had the car cleaned ready for visiting family! Not a bad total considering.
Category | Amount ($) | Notes |
---|---|---|
Fuel | $110 | |
Car Valet | $20 | |
Parking | $2 | |
Total ($) | $132 | |
Total (£) | £115 |
Entertainment/Misc
Our October spending in this category is high because of our trip to New York in December. This time it was the flights which needed paying for. Hopefully it’ll all be worth it for some New York Christmassy fun!
Our eating out total is high too due to visitors being here, as well as a couple of activities (kayaking and boat trips). We also splashed out on a bike for Baby Way. He loves his current one but it’s too small for him. $200 wasn’t too bad by island standards and it will go away now as a Christmas gift.
Category | Amount ($) | Notes |
---|---|---|
UK Phone Bills | $14 | |
Student Loan | $185 | |
School Fees | $40 | |
Eating Out | $220 | |
Presents | $5 | |
Boat Trip | $130 | |
Kayak Hire | $66 | |
Sun Cream | $24 | |
Sun Glasses | $90 | |
NY Flights | $1,040 | |
Child's Bike | $200 | |
Total ($) | $2,014 | |
Total (£) | £1,751 |
That’s All for Now, Folks!
Considering the average US household spend is $5,111 we’re very happy with our spending, considering we’re on a very high cost of living island! Long may that continue.
See you next month!
