Monthly Spending – January 2022

Summary

Welcome to our January spending post! Our total spend for the month was £1,907

Starting 2022 in positive fashion, with a return to our sub-£2,000 months. We’re aiming to move to the Caribbean in March, so our spending will be changing dramatically soon. For our last month or so in the UK, we’re aiming to spend as little as possible in preparation!

We break our main expenses down into broad categories starting with the big 3; housing, food and transport. Everything else falls into the entertainment category, with any large inclusions explained in detail.

CategoryAmountNotes
Housing£959See below
Food£345See below
Transport£151See below
Entertainment/misc£452See below
Total£1,907

We break each of these categories down in the following sections, giving detail for any large expenses.

Housing

The housing category consists of our mortgage payment, overpayments, bills, insurance, DIY costs etc.

CategoryAmountNotes
Mortgage£415
Overpayment£335
Bills£98Gas, electricity & water.
Council Tax£111
Total £959

We continue to be very happy with our energy supplier, Octopus Energy. Our energy is from 100% renewable sources too which is a great bonus. If you are interested, click through this link and you will get £50 and so will we! It can be hard to find a decent energy company but we really do recommend Octopus.

Food

Our January spending on food was £345. As explained previously, this includes everything on our supermarket shop receipts for the month.

Transport

We used a fairly standard amount of fuel this month. Unfortunately, we also managed to get a parking ticket! A private car park we haven’t used for a few years due to Covid has had a change of ownership. The signs look almost identical so we didn’t read them. Turns out they changed the rules. Damn!

CategoryAmountNotes
Fuel£91
Car Insurance£60
Total£151

Entertainment/Misc

Our January spending in this category has returned to a much more reasonable level. We’ve bought most of the expensive items for our move now. Hopefully we haven’t forgotten anything!

CategoryAmountNotes
Phone Bills£10
TV License£13
Lottery £10
Eating Out£50
Presents£48
Clothes£90
Sun Creams£88
Cheeky Wipes and Pants£35
