My ‘Monthly’ Money Saver

4 Reasons to Switch to a Menstrual Cup!

Mooncup

Us girls have a lot to put up with once a month. For those lucky few, periods come and go without too much disruption to their lives. Unfortunately, I have never been that lucky. Ever since mine started they have been a monthly ordeal. Either very heavy, very painful, extremely emotional or often all three!! I am sure many women experience similar.

On top of this, being on your period can be expensive! There are definitely frugal ways of approaching this but often the cheaper sanitary options are a lot less comfortable or effective. Having tried lots of options through the years I have settled very happily on the ‘menstrual cup’.

There are many companies out there making menstrual cups but I chose the Mooncup® menstrual cup.

The reasons I have moved to this sanitary product and particularly the Mooncup are:

1. Money Saver

  • Only £22! It will pay for itself in 6 – 8 months (depending how much you are used to paying for your sanitary products). Think about all those easy monthly savings!
  • One Mooncup lasts for years – as long as you look after it as they suggest.

2. Environmentally Friendly

  • As quoted on their website, Mooncup tells us that over our lifetime we will use 11,000 disposable sanitary products. This contributes to the 27,938 tampons and sanitary products collected on the world’s beaches in one day. That is a ridiculous amount of non-biodegradable waste!! So, although the Mooncup is made from medical grade silicon which is not biodegradable, it is recyclable. If more people used a menstrual cup just think how much non-recyclable plastic could be saved!

3. Comfort & Ease of Use

  • Once you get used to how take it in and out, it’s fantastic! You will hardly know it is there. I can honestly say that since using the cup I have had less cramps and am more comfortable each month. As the cup is designed to need changing a lot less frequently than traditional sanitary products, it makes me relax and not stress so much about the occurrence of unfortunate accidents.
  • Activities and sports are not a problem at all once you are practiced in getting it in the right position.
  • Lightweight and easily portable – comes in a useful cotton drawstring pouch.
  • I have used it in everyday life and whilst traveling in Africa and it has been great in all circumstances. As long as you follow all the steps that Mooncup suggest, you can use it in any situation.

4. UK Based, Employee Owned and One of the UK’s Top 50 Ethically Owned Companies

  • I am sure within this FI community we can really appreciate that it is always great to support a well-run, ethical, UK company, whose profits are returned to the employees. If you read up about the company’s journey and their subsequent charity work, I am sure you will agree with me.

I’ve used my Mooncup for over a year now and it is such a positive move. I was going to post this article anyway but when I spotted they have an affiliate programme I decided to join as I believe in the product and the company as a whole.

  1. I really have considered using a menstrual cup but I know myself and I know I would end up in a right mess! I know tampons are bad for the environment but in this case, I would pay for the convenience.

I haven’t really suffered with my periods – they were always pretty light, only the occasional cramps and (as far as I’m aware!), no emotional changes. That said, as I’ve gotten older, they’ve gotten heavier. However, I’ve probably only a couple of years left before my body clock says enough so I can throw away the tampons for good.

  2. A Way to Less

I genuinely thought I would end up in a mess too but it’s honestly so easy. As you say though, everyone knows their own body and it won’t be right for all of us.

I just hope a few more people give menstrual cups a go because it has made such a huge difference to my life!

    Thanks for the comment,

    Miss Way
